Our house now has three ukuleles, a guitar, a mandolin, a highland snare drum, a drum core snare drum, a couple of tin whistles, a bodhran, at least half a dozen harmonicas, a keyboard, and assorted small percussion instruments. And only one of those instruments is borrowed!

Idzie is Speaking at the Rethinking Everything... →
The Rethinking Everything Conference is one I’ve had my eye on for several years, and came very close to attending as a regular ol’ attendee a couple of years ago when Daniel Quinn (author of Ishmael and Beyond Civilization among other books) was speaking, but ultimately it was just outside my budget. So I was truly thrilled (and honored) to be invited to attend this year as a...

I really miss Maine, and the smell of farms and trees, and getting to spend time with lots of critters, and living temporarily with one of my best friends… My two best friends and I want to move in together and have an awesome sustainable homestead/small farm.

Haircuts and the Obligation of Attractiveness @... →
this culture rewards and centers around white-cisgender-heterosexual-males above all else. Those men are told from the time they’re small how much they’re worth, how much they’re owed, and that that they have the right to own others, among many things. And women, well, we owe (white-heterosexual-etc.) men our bodies, and our attractiveness. We have an obligation to attempt...

The zesty joy of weight loss @ Sistermatic... →
[Trigger Warning for talk of weight loss, dieting, “thinspiration,”] Weight loss is just one more way of stripping women of choices regarding their own bodies, one more way to shame and control them, and one that’s not only emotionally damaging but also incredibly physically damaging. It took me awhile to realize why I found this particular ad so disturbing. There are the...

violetroots: womenwithspunkandexplosives:unknowablewoman Alright, Tumblr vegans. Since I’m unable to physically smack y’all upside your nasty dreaded heads, you get this rant instead. I want to talk about food choices.  If you’re not totally clueless, you’re probably already aware of the classism and racism inherent in the “EVERY1 CAN BE VEG*N!!1” trope. We’ve been down that road with them...
