Grieving Mom Cries for Help: Says Local Media and Police Chief Wrongfully Blame Her for Her Baby’s Death
By Evelyn Red Lodge
Rapid City – A sobbing mother who lost her 3-year-old son in a vehicle accident on Friday and has most of her immediate family in intensive care today called Last Real Indians to report disturbing news.
She began, “Please help me. I lost my baby, and the Rapid City Journal is making it sound like I was drunk and killed my baby.”
Once she could speak again she said, “The Rapid City Journal posted my son’s name in the story and I didn’t even have time to notify everyone. The accident happened at 2:30 p.m. and the Journal posted that story too soon.  Then the writer said I was in the accident.  I was in Rapid City when it (the accident) happened.  And there’s more.”  READ MORE AT: http://www.lastrealindians.com/2012/05/07/grieving-mom-cries-for-help-says-local-media-and-police-chief-wrongfully-blame-her-for-her-babys-death/#more-720
Please reblog and share Mackey’s cries for compassion and justice.

Oh god. Oh god.
The hospital staff wouldn’t even tell her what had happened to her son. She waited there for three hours, and they never told her. A fucking FBI agent did.

Standing Up to Tumblr Teachers: Defending Unschooling in Highschool.

howtodropoutofschool:

Tumblr is roaring over my new blog “How to Drop out of Highschool”. The education sect is furious- teachers, professional educators and tumblr editors are screaming over my objective.

This post will focus on the three main objections I’ve watched dance on my dash.

1.  The Potential Risk Of Dropping Out
2.  The Need of Unschooling in Highschool
3.  The Blog’s Title

1. “Telling kids that they should drop out of school is setting them up for failure” (Technologation)

I outline in my blog that homeschooler’s  have a statistically higher chance at college acceptance. I outline the legal ways of getting a Highschool diploma from a public school while unschooling.  This claim is ridiculous- even a mild reading in homeschooling will prove the falsities of it.

2. I think we can all agree that the value of an expensive university education is under due scrutiny right now, but in no way do I see the point of arguing for quitting something that is provided to you, for free, while you are a minor. (StephanieMichelleHall)

I’m sick of minors being looked down on- yes, we’re under-age and inexperienced- but the only way we’re going to  gain experience is by leaving the classroom.

We know how we learn- Not our Parents or Teachers or Principles or report cards.  I’m a year younger than a college sophomore. I deserve the same  educational independence.

3. There isn’t one quote to post here- they’re sweeping tumblr. Is my  title too sensational? Yes, absolutely. But it gets my message across, it YELLS my message. My title aptly portrays my platform- it glues attention.

“How To Drop Out Of Highshcool”is bringing the  issue of highschool education to the people who need to hear it most- Highscoolers. This demographic is what sets it apart from other education blogs-  ultimantly it’s informing teens about education- more importantly, it’s teaching them to question education.

And as teachers- how can you argue against that?

Way to go for starting this blog, it’s so cool that this now exists!

“The ideal environment for raising children turns out to be not that of the nuclear family but on in which there are at least three secure relationships (gender nonspecific), meaning three relationships that convey the clear message: ‘You will be cared for no matter what.’” —

~Carol Gilligan, Joining the Resistance, p. 53

Not that secure relationships are limited to parents, but my first thought reading this passage was, “So poly families are what we should all be aiming for!”

“Rulers have always taken care to control the education of the people. They know their power is based almost entirely on the school and they insist on retaining their monopoly. The school is an instrument for domination in the hands of the ruling class.” — Francisco Ferrer, Anarchist proponent of the “Free School Movement” (via liberationfrequency)

Committing a crime does not remove... -

suzy-x:

thegreenwolf:

Committing a crime does not remove someone’s humanity. I would rather live in a society where rapists and murderers are still treated as human beings, even in a prison, because preserving their right to be human is as important as protecting my right to be…

Wow ok I’m not gonna treat or think of rapists with compassion literally ever thx xoxo

sorry not sorry

Okay so this thread has really started to irk me.

Everyone crying “BUT WHERE WILL ALL THE RAPISTS GO?!?!?!” at those for prison abolition really miss several points here. And one of them is that actually, the vast majority of rapists actually DO NOT end up in prison.

If only 56% or estimated rapes are reported and only 3% of those charged with rape ever see a jail cell, who’s to say that most prisoners are rapists? In fact it seems a minority of prisoners actually are violent offenders. Meanwhile, a rising number of people in prison are actually “drug offenders” (AKA young people of color who sell or use drugs) who’ve been racially profiled. According to wikipedia:

As of 2006, 49.3% of state prisoners, or 656,000 individuals, were incarcerated for non-violent crimes. As of 2008, 90.7% of federal prisoners, or 165,457 individuals, were incarcerated for non-violent offenses.[22] Drug offenses account for two-thirds of the rise in the federal inmate population since 1985; approximately half a million people are in prison for a drug offense today compared to 40,000 in 1981—an increase of 1,100 percent.[23]

The reason we demonstrated in front of a women’s prison on Mother’s Day is because incarcerated women, especially women of color, are disproportionately survivors of violence and trauma. Many of them are incarcerated as a result of their abuse; many fight back, many get duped by their abusers, and many consequently have to leave their families behind. Also, with regards to transwomen, many are profiled by police under the suspicion of being sex workers, and have had to fight off hate crimes.  Eve Ensler, who I usually feel iffy about, has made an excellent documentary and play called Any One of Us, and Victoria Law has written a book called Resistance Behind Bars, which articulates women’s struggles in prisons and outside of them. Angela Davis has also written extensively on the subject as a black feminist and former political prisoner. These works show that these prisoners don’t need to be confined; they need serious help.

If the current criminal justice system was any good, the assholes on Wall Street would be done for, and so would roughly 94% of rapists. If it was any good, my own father wouldn’t have been thrown in prison under the racist pretense that he was undocumented, when he actually showed up to court to pay a debt. But instead, prisons uphold white supremacy and slavery, and continue cycles of abuse for marginalized people. So you all need to do yourselves a favor and read up before you start attacking prison abolitionists, instead of individualizing a structural problem by saying things like “But I need prisons!” When you obviously have no idea what happens in them or how most people get there. No sympathy for rapists, but no excuses for a fucked up prison system.

The Top 6 Reasons Why You Should Hate Dan Savage: Warning for pretty much anything that could trigger you

forgetpolitics:

1. Dan Savage hates trans people and uses transphobic slurs.

“Children have a right to some stability and constancy from the adults in their lives. Perhaps I’m a transphobic bigot, but I honestly think waiting a measly 36 months to cut your dick is a sacrifice any father should be willing to make for his 15-year-old son. Call me old-fashioned.

Unfortunately, your ex wasn’t willing to make that sacrifice (selfish tranny!), or it never occurred to him to make that sacrifice (stupid tranny!)…. If your son can’t deal with having his dad/mom/whatever around right now, support him and tell his dad/mom/whatever to leave the two of you alone for the time being.”

2. Dan Savage believes that bisexuals do not and should not exist.

“I’m not saying bi guys are bad people, or they don’t make great one-night stands. Bushes, bathhouses, and sleazy gay bars are crawling with bi guys. But if a guy wants more, he’ll have an easier time getting it from another gay man.”

3. Dan Savage has admonished women for not putting up with their partner’s sexual desires and has criticized female rape survivors’ stories.

There the guy was, boned for you, and he was brave enough to put his desires out there, to make himself vulnerable (which is what the ladies are always saying they want, right?), and you lobbed the ol’ “What?!?” bomb at him and made him feel like a freak. Is it any wonder that he quickly moved on to “other things” and, one would hope, better sex partners?”

I’m extremely sorry that you were raped, DRARS, although your baseless accusations of rape make me doubt you when you claim to be a survivor of rape. The feminist bloggers are going to accuse me of thought crimes: If a woman says she was raped then, by God, she was raped. (Tell it to the lacrosse team.) But if my reaction to your letter is a thought crime, I can only plead entrapment: I wouldn’t have had these illegal thoughts if you hadn’t sent me such a stupid letter in the first place… Finally, DRARS, I hereby withdraw my consent for you to read Savage Love. If you continue to read my column against my will, well, we all know what word to apply to your actions.”

4. Dan Savage thinks that racist gay white men are less of a threat to African-Americans than homophobic African-Americans are to gay people.

“I do know this, though: I’m done pretending that the handful of racist gay white men out there—and they’re out there, and I think they’re scum—are a bigger problem for African Americans, gay and straight, than the huge numbers of homophobic African Americans are for gay Americans, whatever their color.”

EDIT: Here are some more lovely gems from our resident asshole Dan Savage on his rampant hatred for everything not white, male, and gay:

5. Dan Savage thinks asexuals are secretly “fags”.

“I appreciate the feedback, Stephanie, and I’m sorry I offended you. But… um… I couldn’t help but think, as I read your letter, that your boyfriend is either a fool or a fag. But if it works for you guys—if a romantic relationship devoid of sexual attraction and activity works for you guys—then it works for you guys. Who am I to argue with success?”

6. Dan Savage is fatphobic.

“First off, LARDASS, you neglected to include a sign-off, forcing me to create one for you. I tried to create one that captured the spirit and tone of your letter, and I think I did pretty well… I am thoroughly annoyed at having my tame statements of fact—being heavy is a health risk; rolls of exposed flesh are unsightly—characterized as ‘hate speech.’”
